"This is either an 'okay' or a 'great' game depending on how you play it. Single-player is great, with just the right pace of gameplay to make several hours pass without you realizing it. Games can be long and complex, yet simultaneously engaging. Multiplayer, on the other hand, is frustratingly slow and buggy, to the point where I still haven't been able to complete a game with friends."

"This game looks like a regular space shoot-em-up, but is actually a clever rhythm game which plays in reverse. The goal is to un-fire all your weapons in time to the music, and work your way from the final boss to the first level. Although there's only 10 stages, replayability is helped by leaderboards, more difficulty levels, and extra challenge missions. It also looks great and sounds awesome."

"This game is really the polar opposite of MGS4; instead of sneaking around enemies you confront them head-on as a cyborg ninja, and chop them to bits with your sword. The action is fast, frantic, and completely over the top - but it works, mostly. Unfortunately two of the biggest enemies in the game were the camera and the controls, which frequently got in the way or didn't behave like I expected."

"This is much like the original game, but the inclusion of multiplayer made a big difference in how much I enjoyed exploring dungeons and killing monsters. Randomly-generated levels, weapons and armor means you won't have the same same experience as someone else. Inventory management can get tedious, some skills are useless, and bosses are a bit too easy, but overall I really enjoyed this game."

"This is a fantastic stealth game, which has the unique feature of showing you exactly what will happen before you do it, so you can really plan out your moves. The art and animation is excellent, and as you play you can earn various weapons for more creative kills. Some parts were a challenge, but liberal checkpointing made it easy to try different approaches. Overall really fun to play."

"This game is like a classic breakout title, but with several unique twists that make it a blast to play. In addition to hitting the ball like normal, you can suck or blow air to shift the whole board around. It's fast-paced, extremely polished, and the original music is great as well. Online co-op would have been even better, but there are leaderboards at least. Overall, definitely recommended."
andrew reviewed Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

"This is a great movie, with some gameplay between scenes. Joking aside, if you followed the story through the previous games, MGS4 ties up a lot of loose ends and provides a very satisfying conclusion. Metal Gear Solid sets the standard for stealth games, and the production quality here is once again fantastic. Despite the verbosity of the series, I had a blast playing it, and probably will again."
andrew reviewed XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Nov 13
"I've never played XCOM, but this game really surprised me. It combines turn-based strategy with a base-building element, and the result is something I had trouble putting down. Combat is fun and surprisingly challenging even on normal difficulty. There were a few bugs, but otherwise the game is very polished. If you like strategy games, give the free demo a try!"

"This game is a brutally clever platformer with a unique time-manipulation element that changes in each new world. While the gameplay may look simple at first glance (jump on enemies, collect puzzle pieces), it's actually part of a much deeper narrative that can honestly feel pretentious at times. Still, solving the harder puzzles feels very rewarding, and the art and music are very well done."

"I didn't know what to expect with this game, not having played the original, but it turned out to be one of my favorite games of 2011. The gameplay is extremely polished, mixing stealth with action, and the story is really compelling as well. It takes place in a dystopian future where human augmentations are becoming commonplace, but not without consequences. Fun, atmospheric, highly recommended."
andrew reviewed Metroid: Other M
Sep 04
"This game could have been a lot better if it didn't try so hard to force itself into the Metroid universe. From a purely gameplay standpoint it's actually pretty fun, with tight controls, fast-paced action, and an interesting mix of 2D/3D gameplay. But instead, I spent the whole game cringing at the miserable story and awkward voice acting. But don't let that fool you, it's still very challenging."
andrew reviewed From Dust
Aug 18
"This game is essentially a physics sandbox that has you manipulate natural elements like sand, water and lava and use them to fulfill objectives, which usually involve guiding or protecting the land's tribal inhabitants. While the physics are convincing, the same can't be said for the rest of the game which is often repetitive, frustrating and buggy. Still, I found enjoyment in some of its ideas."
andrew reviewed Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP
Jun 20
"This is a strange, difficult game to describe, but it's so unique I felt compelled to finish it anyway. The game mixes point & click adventuring with a beautiful retro look and a great soundtrack. Most of the game involves walking and puzzle solving, but there's a few battles as well. It's not especially difficult or lengthy, but still worth trying if you're looking for something original."
andrew reviewed Journey
Apr 15
"As its name implies, Journey is more of a guided adventure than a game, but exploring this beautifully crafted world is still a fun and rewarding experience. The music, art and presentation are nearly perfect, which is a shame because the game is so short. A limited multiplayer mode lets you meet a random stranger, but you can't do much except follow each other. Still, worth playing at least once."
andrew reviewed SSX
Mar 16
"SSX brings back the series (and extreme sports genre) in a very big way. With the laws of physics happily thrown out the window, your goal is to race, trick or survive over 150 courses while performing ridiculous tricks. There is no traditional multiplayer, but RiderNet lets you compete against your friends' ghost runs or global events. Some drops get really hard, but overall it's a blast to play."
andrew reviewed Liight
Feb 13
"Liight is a puzzle game where you place spotlights on a board and mix their colors, with the goal of illuminating all the required targets. It's an interesting idea, but unfortunately the presentation is rather poor. The game is slow, and the audio could be a lot better. Difficulty increases not through harder puzzles but rather needing more specific spotlight placement, which the controls hinder."
andrew reviewed Dungeon Defenders
Feb 05
"This game is a hybrid tower-defense/action game where your job is to protect your castle's crystals from waves of enemies. Between waves you can build and upgrade special defenses, and during the wave itself you can help fight or maintain your towers (often both). The game has a playful sense of style, but that doesn't stop it from being very challenging at times. 4-player online co-op is a blast."
andrew reviewed Super Meat Boy
Jan 13
"This game is maddeningly difficult and completely unforgiving, but it's also one of the better platformers I've played thanks to the perfect controls and fast-paced, addictive gameplay. Plenty of levels, characters to unlock and leaderboards give it plenty of replay value as well - that is, until you throw your controller across the room."
andrew reviewed Terraria
Jan 13
"Terraria is a completely open-ended adventure/RPG/platforming hybrid game where you explore randomly generated worlds, build tunnels and structures, fight monsters, and craft new gear from the resources you dig up. There is no story to speak of and very little direction, but the fun comes from online play with friends and just participating in pure exploration."
andrew reviewed Heavy Rain
Jan 12
"Heavy Rain is a mature "interactive story" controlled almost entirely though controller gestures and quick time events. You alternate between several different main characters, all of whom are somehow connected to the same dire events. All are very believable and well animated, although voice acting is occasionally weak. The controls can be weird but this game is really played for its great story."
